The western philosophical tradition has only recently explored alterity, in particular the alterity of woman as the other of man. HELEN FIELDING is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Women's Studies at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She has published articles on Irigaray, Heidegger, Nancy and Merleau-Ponty.
