Piezoelectric materials produce electric charges on their surfaces as a consequence of applying mechanical stress. They are used in the fabrication of a growing range of devices such as transducers (used, for example, in ultrasound scanning), actuators (deployed in such areas as vibration suppression in optical and microelectronic engineering), pressure sensor devices (such as gyroscopes) and increasingly as a way of producing energy. Kenji Uchino is Academy Professor Emeritus in Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, United States. He is a pioneer in piezoelectric actuators, and has been a university professor for 51 years, a government officer for 7 years, and a company executive for 21 years in the US and Japan. His research interests focus on dielectrics, ferroelectrics, and piezoelectrics, as well as device design and fabrication, solid state actuators, transducers, positioners, and ultrasonic motors.
