He has served in a number of academic and administrative positions and in 2009 he moved to Washington, DC, to serve as Senior Health Advisor to the International Medical Corps, before joining the Global Mental Health program at the department of psychiatry at the George 500Washington University. He is the author of several books on professional ethics including Ethics and Psychiatry: Toward Professional Definition and (co-author with Laura Roberts) of A Concise Guide to Ethics in Mental Health Care as well as a cancer memoir, One More Mountain to Climb: What my Illness Taught me about Health. He has worked in disaster affected communities in China after the Great Sichuan Earthquake, Haiti, Japan after its Triple Disaster and particularly in Iraq to improve health infrastructure.
