Contented Dementia

The compassionate and practical guide to managing dementia and Alzheimer's, from a clinical psychologist and Sunday Times bestselling author.Dementia is a little understood illness but, while there is currently no cure, much can be done to support wellbeing and maintain quality of life for people living with this condition. In Contented Dementia, clinical psychologist and bestselling author, Oliver James, outlines a groundbreaking and practical method for managing dementia that will allow both sufferer and carer to maintain the highest possible quality of life, throughout every stage of the illness. The SPECAL method (Specialised Early Care for Alzheimer’s) was developed to help carers, families and professionals respond to memory loss and behavioural changes with understanding, confidence, and a personalised approach. The method is based on a simple but powerful principle: although recent memory fades, emotional memory and long-term memories often remain strong. By working with, rather than against, the reality experienced by the person with dementia, SPECAL helps reduce distress, improve communication and create a calmer, more contented daily life.Drawing on real-life examples and user-friendly tried-and-tested methods, Contented Dementia provides essential information and guidance for families, caregivers and healthcare professionals seeking a more positive approach to dementia care.Praise for Contented Dementia:‘A revolutionary new way of treating dementia [that] brings amazing benefits for patients and carers alike’ Guardian‘An indispensable handbook for anyone coping with the effects of dementia and who wants to keep a sufferer as happy as is humanly possible’ Daily Express‘Explains a revolutionary way to care for dementia patients . . . tender techniques that can ease absent minds’ Telegraph‘Anyone who wants help in caring for the condition will find this excellent work a revelation’ Mail on Sunday‘Shows how to minimize distress and manage dementia…I expected this book to be depressing; it is exactly the opposite.’ The Independent
