The British Lighthouse Trail by Sarah Kerr is a comprehensive illustrated guide to more than 600 lighthouses across Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.Combining maritime history, architectural insight, colour photography and practical visitor information, the book explains where Britain’s lighthouses are located, how they developed and why they remain important. Its journey around the coast stretches from Muckle Flugga in Shetland, Britain’s most northerly lighthouse, to La Corbière in Jersey.Sarah Kerr traces the evolution of lighthouse technology from early warning fires and coal beacons to electric lights and automated navigation systems. She also explores the work of celebrated lighthouse engineers, including Scotland’s Stevenson family, whose designs transformed maritime safety around Britain’s coast.Written for coastal travellers, lighthouse enthusiasts, photographers and readers interested in maritime, engineering and architectural history, this accessible guide helps readers discover both celebrated landmarks and lesser-known lights. Richly illustrated throughout, The British Lighthouse Trail is an authoritative guide to the history, design and locations of the lighthouses that have protected generations of seafarers.
