This book offers a comparative overall perspective on the birth and development of the Baltic national church history writing from the beginning of the twentieth century until the Second World War. How did the research trends of the era, the ecclesiastical situation and the tensions in the Baltic Sea Region connect to the national Protestant historiography?Up to now, the topic has been discussed mostly in terms of individual countries, but in this book, the perspective is broader. Along with Estonia and Latvia, the emerging national Protestant historiography of Lithuania is examined as a part of this whole.The subject is analysed through three professors, Olaf Sild (1879–1944; the University of Tartu, Estonia), Ludvigs Adamovičs (1884–1942; the University of Latvia, Riga) and Vilius Gaigalaitis (Wilhelm Gaigalat, 1870–1945; the University of Lithuania, Kaunas). They made a substantial contribution to the teaching of evangelical theology at the national universities of each country.

Riho Altnurme is professor of church history at the School of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Tartu. His main research interests are the churches, the state and society in the twentieth century. He is the editor of Old Religion, New Spirituality: Implications of Secularisation and Individualisation in Estonia (2021).Jaakko Olavi Antila, D.Th., is a diocesan pastor and theological advisor to the bishop in the Diocese of Lapua, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. His main research interest is twentieth-century church history. He has written a history of the General Synod of ELCF (2014). Jouko Talonen is professor (emeritus) of church history at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki. His main research interests are revival movements, especially Laestadianism; church and politics; Baltic church history, especially the church history of Latvia.
