Wilful Ward (Edition2024)

"A Wilful Ward" by Ruth Lamb is a novel that follows Kathleen, a young heiress struggling to reconcile her desire for independence with the social constraints imposed by her father's legacy. The story begins with Kathleen's disappointment over being forbidden from participating in the Hollingsby Hunt, a local event she eagerly anticipated. This sets the stage for her internal conflict, as she yearns to break free from the expectations surrounding her. Her aunt advocates for a more compassionate view of hunting, contrasting sharply with Kathleen's rebellious nature. Torn between her duty to uphold her father's wishes and her personal desires, Kathleen navigates a path of self-discovery, love, and societal pressure. The emotional tension in the novel explores the challenges of balancing love and duty, freedom and responsibility, and how these forces shape Kathleen's understanding of herself and her place in the world. Ultimately, the story delves into the complexities of independence, social expectations, and the emotional struggles that come with the quest for personal fulfillment.
