Beskrivning
We Too Are Drifting is a landmark in American literature, the first mainstream novel that dealt with lesbian relationships in a straightforward, unapologetic manner. Written in spare, precise prose, it relates sculptor Jan Morale’s affair with the married Madeline and her love for Victoria, a younger woman torn between her attraction to Jan and her promise to marry the man approved by her family. We Too Are Drifting has been cherished by generations of readers looking for an account of queer love that is free of any suggestion of judgment or prurience. Gale Wilhelm takes her characters and their desires at face value, conveying deep emotions with unusual intensity. Out of print for almost forty years, We Too Are Drifting is now available again, along with four never-before collected short stories.

Mer information

Gale Wilhelm was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1908 and grew up in Oregon and Idaho. She moved to Berkeley, California in 1923 and, aside from a year in New York City in the mid-1930s, lived in northern California thereafter. After publishing several short stories, she signed with Random House to publish her first novel, We Too Are Drifting, in 1935. She published five more novels over the next ten years but appears to have stopped writing after 1945. She lived with Helen Page in Oakdale, California until 1948, then moved to Berkeley, where she lived with Kathleen Huebner until her death in 1991.

Recensioner i media

“Probably the major novel of the thirties to deal with lesbians; perhaps the best of all time.... Exceptional literary merit.”- Marion Zimmer Bradley
