Conceived as a trilogy, The Waters of Lahore is a political autobiography written in the third person, loosely using the literary technique known as the stream of consciousness, popularised by novelists like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner. This style of writing gives the author the freedom to talk about issues and events as they occur to him, flitting from one place to another and from time past to time present and to time future. The work consists of three boks, each independent of the other and each exploring a different theme and era. The essence of 'The Treanfer of Power' is about parting: from Britain and India in 1947, from Bengal after the tragedy of 1971, and from Omar Azfar, the author's first-born, who lost his battle to cancer on 21 January 2009. 'Camelot by the Sea', dedicated to Sanam Bhutto, the only living offspring of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto, is the realization of a wish expressed by Benazir Bhutto which, after her assassination, the author says 'became a command.' 'Asian Drama Revisited' proposes an Asian Free Trade Association (AFTA) stretching from Jakarta in the east Pacific to Jiwani on the Western shore of Balochistan and from Tienstin on the Yellow Sea in the north to Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. Asia has to prepare itself for the Asian Century.
