How did mobility, exchange, and local agency shape the urban world of late medieval Transylvania within its South-Eastern and Central European context? This volume gathers studies inspired by Konrad G. Gündisch’s pioneering work on the Transylvanian Saxons and the dynamics of pre-modern urban life. Originating partly from the 2023 symposium “The Urban Space: Patterns of Mobility and Cultural Transfer in Late Medieval Europe (1200–1500),” the volume explores the intersections of people, ideas, and objects, from ecclesiastical networks and migration to artistic exchange, legal practices, and cultural heritage. Through interdisciplinary approaches and newly interpreted sources, the contributors depict cities and towns as “fluid spaces of acculturation,” mediating between regional identities and broader cultural trends. The volume’s focus on bridging local histories and continental perspectives offers scholars, students, and interested readers a vivid insight into how urban communities at Europe’s periphery negotiated change, identity, and continuity across the late Middle Ages.
