This historical and philological work on Undhang-Undhang Bantĕn (UUB) constitutes a significant contribution to the study of Islam in Southeast Asia within the broader legal dynamics of the Indian Ocean world. It illuminates a crucial dimension of Islamic development in the Indonesian archipelago: the interaction between Islamic legal norms and local customary practices. A close analysis of the UUB reveals that its legal ‘code’ incorporated elements of sharia and fiqh only marginally, primarily drawing on dirgama, or customary law. The qadi’s decision to privilege this source reflects an exercise of ijtihād informed by the principles of ʿurf and ʿādat, demonstrating a sophisticated and context-sensitive process of legal adaptation.
