In 2025, the death mask of King Tutankhamun, one of the world’s most famous art objects, went on display in the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt (GEM), alongside over 5,000 objects found by Howard Carter when the tomb of Tutankhamun was opened in 1922. This is the first time all objects have been shown together and properly catalogued for such a display, providing a unique and fascinating insight into the past. Millions of people every year, including hundreds of thousands who have visited Cairo previously, will now have unprecedented access to Egyptian history via the GEM. The innovative design allows that visitors to have direct access from the museum to the Pyramids of Giza via a walkway. Tutankhamun's reign is considered one of the greatest periods in ancient Egyptian history, and his tomb door proclaims his dedication to illustrative constructions of the ancient Egyptian gods. Tutankhamun died unexpectedly aged about 18; his health and the cause of his death have been the subject of much debate. In modern times, Tutankhamun became famous as a result of the 1922 discovery of his tomb by a team led by Egyptologist Howard Carter. It retained much of its original contents, including the king's undisturbed mummy. The discovery received worldwide press coverage and gave rise to renewed public interest in ancient Egypt. Tutankhamun Illustrated is a guide to the life of the boy pharoah, the discovery of his tomb and the subsequent 'curse' that saw several of those involved die unexpectedly, and the subsequent history of the tomb's contents leading to their display in the new Cairo Museum.
