Tropical Vernacular

In an era of climate vulnerability, housing crises, and cultural homogenization, Tropical Vernacular explores how ancestral building traditions can guide more resilient and equitable futures. Moving across tropical contexts – from the Zenú canals of northern Colombia and Tayrona terracing in the Sierra Nevada to Hawai’i’s ahupua’a systems and Eastern Polynesian house-making – this catalog-like book illustrates architectural forms, construction techniques, and cultural logics that have shaped thriving landscapes for centuries. Blending architectural documentation and archaeological research, it highlights enduring bonds between Oceania and equatorial America. The book invites readers to consider how shared ancestral practices – dry-stone platforms, wood and bamboo structures, palm-frond enclosures, thatched roofs, and collective craftsmanship – may have traveled across the Pacific, adapting to new landscapes while maintaining a shared worldview of ecology, community, and place. Accessible to architects, planners, students, and makers, Tropical Vernacular proposes vernacular building knowledge not as nostalgia but as practical, evolving design vocabulary – reminding us that the future may be found in the wisdom of the past.
