The early 21st century is the age of networked information, where more than ever in the history of technological progress, society's reliance on communication networks for health care, education, scientific data transfer, commerce and many other endeavours dominates everyday life. We are facing quotidianly progressing developments in communication techniques, the rapid implementation of new technologies, a standardization process, emerging markets and carriers in permanent motion. This text comprises the proceedings of the Fifth Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). Presenting progress made in optical network architectures, design, operation and management, the conference took place in Vienna, Austria in February 2001. In the tradition of the previous conferences (Athens '00, Paris '99, Rose '98, and Vienna '97), which brought together university researchers, technology leaders and network operators, this book addresses new optical network engineering aspects to be pursued, implemented, and discovered.
