Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke

The majority of stroke syndromes are caused by thrombotic occlusion of the cerebral arteries. Timely dissolution of blood clots by intravenous or intra-arterial infusion therefore might be a logical treatment strategy for acute thrombotic or embolic stroke. This volume gives an account of the present diagnostic approaches in acute thrombotic and thrombembolic stroke and the rationale for the use of thrombolytic agents in acute stroke. The most dangerous possible side effect of this treatment strategy, haemorrhage, is carefully discussed. Particular attention is paid to the latest developments in thrombolytic drugs. The results of all major safety and efficacy trials on thrombolytic therapy in stroke are also presented.
