Osmund unhooked his bugle from his belt, but before he could summon up enough breath to blow it, a strange-looking man came leaping out of the wood.

"Who dare stay my hounds? Who dare interfere with my quarry?" he shouted in a fury, and ran down upon the boy, his face scarlet with passion and a great knife gleaming in his hand.
