The Visual Silence

A personal and multilayered essay in which the values of daily life are interwoven with artistic research and a journey through the proximity of death. Filmmaker Mia Engberg is about to begin shooting a feature film in Paris—her most ambitious production to date—when a series of events in both art and life thrust her into a crisis that is at once creative and existential.

Mia Engberg is a filmmaker, researcher and author. Her films include the award-winning trilogy Belleville Baby, Lucky One, and Hypermoon as well as the widely acclaimed Dirty Diaries – 12 Shorts of Feminist Porn. She holds a PhD from Stockholm University of the Arts and her cinematic research explores the aesthetics of absence, navigating the intersection of documentary and fiction, poetry and essay. The Visual Silence is her second book.
