Just because everyone thinks you're nothing doesn't mean you've got nothing to lose.

George Engle has lived most of his life in the long shadow cast by his superstar twin brothers, who were killed in a freak accident when he was just thirteen. Now in the spring of 1986, ten years after graduation, George and his high school friends are estranged and stuck in lives they never wanted. It's easier to sleepwalk through insignificance than confront their traumatic pasts and hopeless futures, until a second freak accident jolts them out of their slackadaisical existence—only this one is no accident.

Late one night, George wakes up in his car on an unfamiliar street just in time to watch a house explode. To his bewilderment, he finds a knife, a gas can, and a sizable bag of cocaine on his back seat, not to mention a bloody handprint on his face. As sirens wail only blocks away, he makes a desperate run from police who may not be police.

After escaping to his tiny Kansas hometown, he finds out the explosion was a cover-up for three baffling execution-style murders. George was supposed to take the fall, and now the killers will surely hunt him down.

George and his friends will have to reunite to uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths, a murderous drug cartel, and their own self-deception. But in the process, they will discover the ripples extend far beyond their small world, and no one and nothing is to be trusted—not even their own memories.
