In 1791 Hati, the free black coffee farmer and Catholic mystic Romaine-la-Prophtesse led a mass insurgency under revelatory instructions from the Virgin Mary, whom he claimed as his godmother. Aided by the French Catholic priest Abb Ouivire, Romaine would go on to conquer two coastal cities.
