Nearly a year has passed since Florian Fooks, hardware store owner, husband, father and reforming outlaw, last left the safety of Bronze Canyon. Hearing that someone has shot his old partner, Tobias Swan, Fooks crosses the Mississippi for the first time.

On the long journey to Boston, he discovers things are even worse for Swan. He's on the run, wanted for the murder of the uncle of the woman, Swan ran away with. With Swan as the last person to see the victim alive and the police closing in on him, Fooks is in a race against time to prove his partner innocent. Way outside his comfort zone, the more Fooks discovers about the dead man's murky life, the more convinced he becomes that there is more to his death than appears at first glance.
