?The body of this book consists of a general introductory essay, five chapters on specific tribal groups from Massachusetts to Virginia, a brief conclusion, and a bibliographical essay. The authors address an important topic in the ethnohistory of the eastern United States--the persistence of Indian enclaves that long ago were submerged within American society. They also ask an important question--what are the strategies by which these submerged groups survived? This combination of geographical focus and unifying question gives coherence to the collection. The five groups represented are the Okehocking Band of Lenape in southeastern Pennsylvania the mainland Wampanoag of Massachusetts, the Poospatuck of Long Island, the Nanticoke of Maryland and Delware, and the Powhatan-derived Citizen' Indians of Virginia. Each chapter tells a local story of adversity and adaptation.... Porter and the contributing authors deserve credit for pioneering this fertile ground. Anyone interested in eastern Native American ethnohistory will welcome this collection.?-Georgia Historical Quarterly
