This volume of the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition, focuses on current challenges in the field from materials and mechanics to applications of statistical and nonlinear physics in the life sciences. Bulbul Chakraborty is the Enid and Nate Ancell Professor of Physics at Brandeis University. Her research focuses on theory of soft condensed matter. She obtained her doctorate from Stony Brook University with a thesis on superconductivity. Her early work focused on strongly correlated electronic systems, including high Tc superconductors. Her recent research has focused on developing a statistical mechanics framework for granular media and other disordered systems that are non-thermal.
