Sport in Cork

The city and county of Cork has long been associated with sporting prowess in every field. For the first time, the history and development of a host of major sports in Cork and its environs have been gathered together. From major spectator sports such as the GAA, soccer and rugby, to tennis, rowing, cricket and golf, Sport in Cork charts their beginnings and how they came to be organised as their popularity grew. O’Sullivan looks at developments in rules and finances, and the roles and behaviour of spectators, showing how these pastimes impacted upon and informed their localities. Finally the importance of the sporting press is examined, as the games developed, from the 1800s through to the mid 20th century.
