Space Architecture Education for Engineers and Architects

Dr. Ing. Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger is a practicing architect and accredited researcher in the field of Habitability Design in Extreme Environments and Space Architecture. She is affiliated with the Research Unit Building Construction and Design 2 at TU Wien, where she teaches courses in space architecture and construction, and emerging fields in architecture. She also instructs and leads space architecture design studios at universities across Europe, the US, and Asia. She is the Academic Director of the Executive MBA in Space Architecture at TU Wien, and leads the Space Course at the Science Academy in Lower Austria. Dr. Häuplik-Meusburger is Academician at the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), Chair of the IAA History committee and former chair of the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) of AIAA and the Space Habitats Committee of the IAF. She is also the author of these Springer book publications: Architecture for Astronauts—An Activity-based Approach, Space Habitats and Habitability – Designing for Isolated and Confined Environments on Earth and in Space, and Weltraum – Extreme Lebensraeume und deren BewohnbarkeitDr. Olga Bannova is a research professor at Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston. She is also the past chair of SATC (2020–2022) and Director, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) and its Master of Science in Space Architecture program educating students for 20 years. She is the author of the book Human habitats beyond the planet Earth, led the IAA position paper The role of space architecture, and co-author with Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger of the Space Architecture Education for Engineers and Architects, where they explain space architecture design strategy and major aspects of planning and designing to enable human space flight. She is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and a past-chair of the ASCE Aerospace Division Executive Committee. Research studies and grants include: Minimum Functionality Habitable Element (MFHE), DSG Habitability, Lunar Base, Deployable Airlock Studies, and lunar surface architectures, Deployable Structures, NASA MIRO Inflatable Deployable Environments and Adaptive Space Systems (IDEAS2) project.
