Software Design in the Age of AI

Design the Decisions That Shape Your System So It Can Scale, Adapt, and Thrive

In Software Design in the Age of AI, the authors define software design as a set of five high-impact decision categories: components, data, logic, modules, and naming. These decisions determine whether systems can grow in a healthy way, rather than collapse under the weight of accumulated changes.

This book introduces design-rule thinking and the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) that help to turn "invisible" design principles, patterns, and anti-patterns into structures you can see, analyze, and quantify. For organizations facing accelerating delivery cycles and managing AI-generated code, this book is a practical blueprint for building software that stays adaptable, maintainable, and economically valuable over time. Software design shapes all the systems that power modern business, technology, and everyday life.

You'll learn how to diagnose design health, prevent architectural debt, and design modular systems where humans set the rules and AI does the coding. Through reasoning about the essential difficulties of design--context, change, and people--the authors show how to create stable abstractions--design rules--that enable parallel development, faster evolution, and clearer responsibility boundaries. The result: fewer ripple effects, cleaner extensions, and systems that easily grow and evolve long after v1 ships. In particular, the book helps you

• Understand how abstraction and modularization reduce complexity and enable systems to evolve over time
• Apply design rules to create independent modules that improve scalability and team productivity
• Use visual models like the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to analyze dependencies and design quality
• Identify and avoid common design anti-patterns that lead to technical debt
• Measure and monitor software systems to maintain performance, maintainability, and growth
• Understand how AI enhances design workflows from prototyping to code generation while preserving human-led design decisions

Whether you are an engineer, architect, or technology leader, this book helps you move from just writing code to shaping systems because the future of software isn't just built faster, it's designed better.
