George Piper Boughton was born in Sunderland, England, in 1869 to Jane and Charles Boughton Commander of the SS Cingalese. Twelve years later the boy began his apprenticeship at sea, a lengthy, intense experience that made him a Master Mariner, then Captain, and finally a Member of the Marine Board for London and Superintendent to the Shipping Federation of Britain. He died on 1 January 1940, aged 71, in London, England.Kenneth D Shoesmith RI was a prolific artist, his works included several large pieces for the old Queen Mary, including an altarpiece, The Madonna of the Atlantic for the Cabin Class Drawing Room. He also produced the screen of harbour scenes that covered the altarpiece when the room was not in use as a chapel. These are still on display in the Queen Mary at Long Beach, California. He was well known for his marine posters advertising pre-war Trans-Atlantic Liners. His style of representing ocean liners became instantly recognisable and is still copied to this day."
