Sidney Painter was a medieval historian and professor of history at Johns Hopkins University. In addition to Scourge of the Clergy, Painter wrote French Chivalry, Studies in the History of the English Feudal Barony, and William Marshal: Knight-Errant, Baron, and Regent of England.
