Scalped

This groundbreaking volume examines one of the most enduring and misunderstood images in American cultural history—the figure of the "scalping Indian." Across more than three centuries of fiction, nonfiction, reportage, and rumor, white settlers, writers, and audiences repeatedly returned to this image to justify fear, violence, land seizure, and, ultimately, genocide.
