Beskrivning
Not so much a discovery as a re-discovery, Robert Walton’s new book of poems, Sax Burglar Blues, is his first full collection since winning a Welsh Arts Council Prize in the 70s. After a working life as a teacher, Walton has resurrected his artistic gifts, and years of experience give his work both a spiky mien and an artful complexity.Packed with memory, incident, observation, opinion, humour, outrage and elegy, this collection benefits hugely from the author’s years of experience. Subjects include: woodlice, jazz, teachers, grandparents, a canary who runs for President, Sisley’s lovely painting of the Gower, the iconoclastic poet John Tripp, a night bus named after Dusty Springfield, the beauty of an Ash tree in spring, a Dad who loves Cardiff City, the austere beauty of a Bristol church, the annoying closure of bookshops and much more!

Mer information

Born in Cardiff in 1948, Robert Walton's first collection of poems, Workings, won the Welsh Arts Council New Poet Award in 1978 but, for reasons which are still a mystery to him, he stopped writing for almost twenty years. Robert resumed writing in the late 90s, initially working with artists in other media – music, dance, storytelling, film and installation. His poetry pamphlet, Waiting for the Wave, was published by Pighog Press in 2012. He has co-written two plays for Inkling Productions Labyrinth (2012) and Green Shoots (2014). He is a member of the poetry workshop and performance group, The Spoke, which regularly presents its work in Bristol Poetry Festival, and is an experienced reader of his work. Robert is now working on a novel and dissertation in the final year of a part-time PhD at Cardiff University where he also teaches Creative Writing to undergraduates.
