Beskrivning
Satellite Meteorology: Weather and Climate from Space offers a comprehensive overview of how satellite technology has revolutionized our understanding of meteorology and climate. The book begins with an introduction to the Earth system, explaining the interconnectedness of various meteorological phenomena and the critical role satellites play in monitoring these processes. It provides insights into satellite orbits and navigation, detailing how these elements are fundamental to the accurate collection of meteorological data. The text explores the different sensors used in satellite meteorology, highlighting their capabilities in measuring temperature, wind patterns, cloud cover, and precipitation. Each of these components is essential for constructing a comprehensive picture of atmospheric conditions and climate dynamics. Furthermore, the book discusses the vast datasets generated by satellite observations and their significance in climate research and weather forecasting. In addressing the future of satellite meteorology, the book reflects on emerging technologies and methodologies that promise to enhance our capabilities in monitoring the Earth's atmosphere. This forward-looking perspective underscores the importance of continuous innovation in satellite systems to address the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events. Ultimately, this book serves as an invaluable resource for meteorologists, climate scientists, and students, illustrating how satellite technology enhances our understanding of atmospheric processes and contributes to informed decision-making in weather prediction and climate resilience.

  • Comprehensively describes satellite observations for meteorology and climate
  • Provides an interdisciplinary view of satellite meteorology with a clear and rigorous approach for students and practitioners
  • Presents interconnected applications with observations and datasets that allow for a better understanding of what is available and what needs to be still explored

Vincenzo Levizzani is a cloud physicist and satellite meteorologist. He has worked for more than 40 years at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the Italian National Research Council in Bologna and taught for more than 20 years cloud physics at the University of Bologna. He is among the founders of the International Precipitation Working Group of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites and has worked in close contact with EUMETSAT, ESA, NASA, NOAA and JAXA. He has participated to the planning of several satellite missions, including Meteosat and the EUMETSAT Polar System. His scientific interests concentrate on the physics and climatology of clouds and precipitation, extreme events and severe storms. He is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, several authored and edited books for Springer Nature, and a number of popular science books. Ralph R. Ferraro, formerly theAssociate Director of ESSIC (2021-2036) and former Chief of the NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Climate Studies Branch (2005-2021). Ferraro joined NOAA in 1991 as a Physical Scientist and became one of the original group of five scientists in SCSB in 2003. During his career, Ferraro has been affiliated with several science teams. He has previously led the NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) Precipitation Science Team and was a member of NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Mission (PMM) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) science teams. He has also served as the co-chair and the rapporteur of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS), International Precipitation Working Group. Ferraro’s current research focuses on the use of environmental satellite remote sensing for both weather and climate studies with an emphasis on precipitation and other hydrological cycle products.
