Sinclair W. Bell is a Professor of Art History and a Distinguished Teaching Professor at Northern Illinois University. His research focuses on the art and archaeology of the Etruscans; sport and spectacle in the Roman imperial period; and slavery and freedom in the Roman world, especially the archaeological traces and visual culture of slaves, freed persons, and ethnic foreigners.Brad Hostetler is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Kenyon College. He specializes in the art and material culture of Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire, with a particular emphasis on portable luxury objects from the ninth through the twelfth centuries. His research focuses on the relationships between texts and images, including ekphraseis about, and words inscribed on, works of art. He has held fellowships at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
