Beskrivning
Fatigue and stress represent critical yet often overlooked threats to safety across all modes of transportation. From aviation incidents linked to pilot exhaustion to rail accidents caused by operator overload, these human performance challenges continue to claim lives and compromise system integrity. As the transportation landscape evolves with the introduction of eVTOL aircraft, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) platforms, and increasingly autonomous systems, operators are transitioning from active controllers to supervisors of automation which is altering cognitive demands and creating fatigue exposure profiles that current regulations struggle to address. These shifts demand a unified and evidence-based approach to understanding and managing the human performance risks that span aviation, maritime, rail, road freight, and emerging mobility sectors. The Role of Fatigue and Stress in Transportation: A Human-Centric Transportation Safety Approach delivers multi-modal examination of transportation fatigue and stress management, integrating operational realities with psychological science, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies. Across these chapters, the volume explores the theoretical foundations of fatigue science, the regulatory frameworks of EASA, FAA, and UK CAA, and the practical implementation of Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS). It examines critical operational challenges including single-pilot operations, wearable physiological monitoring, and the use of eye-tracking systems as real-time indicators of cognitive fatigue and attention failure. The book also confronts the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of deploying monitoring technologies in professional settings and addresses workforce consent, data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and the trust-building measures essential for regulatory compliance and operational acceptance. Readers will gain a complete framework for designing, implementing, and governing fatigue and stress interventions that protect both human operators and the systems they manage. This book is essential reading for aviation and transportation safety professionals, human factors specialists, regulatory authorities, occupational health practitioners, and graduate students in aviation management, transportation safety, human factors engineering, and related disciplines.

Dimitrios Ziakkas is Assistant Professor at Coventry University, UK, and member of AAM Institute. He also worked as an Assistant Professor at Purdue University's School of Aviation and Transportation Technology, USA. With over 35 years of operational aviation experience, including more than 12,000 flight hours as an Airbus captain, instructor, examiner, and test pilot, Dr. Ziakkas coordinates graduate programmes in aviation human factors, safety management, and advanced air mobility. His research encompasses human factors in automation and AI, fatigue risk management, and aviation policy, contributing to EASA and ICAO frameworks. He holds several advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, and his research focuses on Human Factors, aviation technology adoption, Artificial Intelligence, flight safety, and advanced air mobility. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of a number of leading aviation and human-factors organisations. Dr. Ziakkas has authored multiple CRC Press volumes on AI, advanced air mobility, and transport accident investigation.Lea Sophie Trampitsch Vink is a chartered Clinical Psychologist and Cognitive Neuroscientist based in Austria. Dr. Trampitsch-Vink is an in-demand researcher and speaker in EU aviation policy, human performance, and cognitive psychology, with specialist expertise in Air Traffic Controller stress, mental health, cognition and accountability as well as predictive human performance. She has held positions managing human performance management systems and human factors in Austria, the UK and as part of CANSO. Additionally, she serves as vice-chair of the EU Commission Expert Group of the Human Dimension in Aviation.Debra Henneberry is Assistant Professor at Purdue University’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology, USA, with nearly 20 years of flight instruction experience. Before joining Purdue, she taught at an aeronautical college in New York City and flew as a personal pilot. She worked for over 10 years as a first responder and emergency medical technician with extensive Department of Homeland Security training, giving her unique emergency response expertise. Her research addresses flight training tactics, aviator talent pipeline expansion, and pilot well-being. She holds degrees from Dickinson College (USA), the University of Leicester (UK), and St. John Fisher University (USA).Ibrahim Sarikaya is Human Factors Manager at Turkish Airlines in Istanbul, Türkiye which is one of the world’s largest network carriers by number of destinations served. As serving captain, he leads the development and oversight of human factors programmes spanning flight operations, cabin crew and ground operations. He is also Turkish Airlines’ point of contact with EASA, ICAO, and national regulators on Crew Resource Management and Evidence-Based Training and contributes to the airline’s Fatigue Risk Management work. His experience from both the flight deck and the management office provides a practitioner's view of what it takes to implement an FRMS at scale across a complex, multi-base operation staffed by crews from many different cultures.
