Christopher Hanes has been Professor of Economics at theState University of New York at Binghamton (Binghamton University) since 2003, after teachingat the University of Mississippi and the Universityof Pennsylvania, and serving as aneconomist at the Federal Reserve Board. Most of his research has been inAmerican macroeconomic history. His publications have appeared in journalsincluding the American Economic Review,the Quarterly Journal of Economics,the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking,the Journal of Economic History, and Explorations in Economic History. He wasgraduated at Yale University and received a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.Associate Professor Susan Wolcott of the EconomicsDepartment at Binghamton University primarily works on issues related to thecolonial development of India.  Herpublications include “Why Nations Fail,” from the Journal of Economic History,1999, and “Strikes in Colonial India,” published in the Industrial and LaborRelations Review 2008.

Economists and other researchers from North America and Europe present five essays about specific aspects of the economic history of Europe, the US, and Asia. They examine the origins of the American Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, first-class passenger ship fares between Britain and New York City from the 1820s to the outbreak of World War I, the American savings and loan meltdown of 1986-1995, investor responses to monetary and fiscal reforms adopted in the wake of an Ottoman government default in 1875, and the behavior of inflation expectations in the early 1930s in the US.
