Religion and Aesthetic Intuition of Reality

The International Yearbook for Tillich Research 2025/2026 discusses Paul Tillich’s reflections on the function of aesthetic expression throughout his body of work.Tillich repeatedly addressed art in its various dimensions. This applies not only to the visual arts, which are usually the focus when his relationship to art is discussed. Tillich’s work also contains reflections on issues related to architecture, music, expressive dance, and literature. This is not surprising, given that art is an integral part of his theology of culture. Culture and its various forms are grounded in the Absolute, so that they can become an image of the Absolute. This volume is the first to address the complexity of Tillich’s theological reflections on art.
