Beskrivning
Reading Paul Goodman brings together previously unavailable interviews, articles, and biographical material that illuminate the remarkable range of Paul Goodman’s work in psychology, education, politics, poetry, and literature.Paul Goodman (1911–1972) was one of the most wide-ranging and provocative American intellectuals of the mid-twentieth century. Author of more than forty books, he challenged conventional thinking about education, politics, society, psychology, sexuality, and the individual’s relationship to an increasingly complex America. The book begins with a biographical overview of Goodman’s life, followed by a guide to his books and literary career. It features interviews with several of Goodman’s psychological colleagues, concerning the early development of Gestalt therapy at the New York Institute of Gestalt Therapy; and also features an extended, previously unpublished interview with Goodman conducted by a doctoral student struggling to understand The Empire City, Goodman’s longest novel and a work more than twelve years in the making. The volume concludes with two contemporary perspectives on Goodman’s ideas about Gestalt therapy and social justice, and his contributions to Gestalt therapy and human development. Together, these materials provide a fresh and multidimensional portrait of a major but often overlooked American thinker. The book will appeal to readers and scholars of Paul Goodman, Gestalt therapy, psychology, education, literature, political and social thought, and twentieth-century American intellectual history, as well as readers interested in Goodman’s continuing relevance to contemporary social and educational questions.

“Jack Aylward and Jean-Marie Robine offer illuminating perspectives on Goodman's life and creative genius, and on his lasting impact on the theoretical, social, and political values at the heart of Gestalt Therapy today. Susan Gregory's discerning introduction, revealing interviews with Taylor Stoehr, Richard Kitzler, and Erving and Miriam Polster, and thought-provoking essays by Charlie Bowman and Carmen Vazquez Bandin, illuminate his community and social justice vision. This exciting work advances Goodman's rediscovery as a Renaissance thinker, offering radical perspectives that may be just what the world needs now as a beacon in the darkness of today’s psychological, social and political landscape.”Perry Klepner- CSW, Fellow, Full member of the New York Institute of Gestalt Therapy “This excellent and important book restores Paul Goodman to the place he deserves: front and center. Writer, thinker, activist, public intellectual, and champion of social justice, Goodman was a prophetic voice whose ideas remain startlingly relevant. Each chapter reveals another dimension of his originality and influence. If Goodman has faded from view, dismissed as a voice from another era, this book shows just how badly we have misunderstood what he still has to say.Goodman is at the heart of Gestalt therapy. We have ignored this truth at our peril. This book is a powerful reminder that it is time to listen again.”Dan Bloom JD, LCSW, President New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy“At last, Goodman celebrated by his Gestalt birthplace, the New York Institute of Gestalt Therapy! An important book for Gestalt therapists everywhere. With personal memories of encounters, a riveting interview which brings Goodman to life as an American anarchist, a bibliography to satisfy the historians of 20th century psychotherapy, Carmen Vázquez Bandín’s masterful synthesis of PHG and of Goodman’s political ideology, and Charlie Bowman –quoting his colleagues Aylward, Lee, Wheeler, Lichtenberg and ending with Freire! – bringing Goodman’s teaching to today’s political context. An invitation to Gestalt practitioners to use their understanding of society and embed their therapeutic interventions in their social activism.”Joëlle Gartner, MSc MBACP Accred SEP, Co-Director of the Gestalt Centre Belfast“Reading this book reminds me why I chose Gestalt therapy: its core premise that the individual and their environment are inseparable. As an activist who entered psychotherapy during armed conflict, Paul Goodman’s explicit naming of politics within practice was vital. By charting Goodman’s ideas and the cultural forces shaping Gestalt, this work powerfully reclaims the modality's radical roots. At a time when psychotherapy is divorced from politics and human presence is displaced by technology, this book serves as an urgent, indispensable reminder of our psychosocial responsibilities.”Brid M. Keenan M.Ed., BACP Member EAGT, SEP Director and Training Co-Ordinator of Somatic Experiencing Ireland
