It is a book for all time.’ Bernardine EvaristoBoyd Tonkin, Independent (Book of the Year)‘A curious title, for a curious, captivating book…With startlingly descriptive language Ross manages to get right inside the heads and hearts of his characters, all the while showing the effect upon them of a decidedly magical, mysterious landscape, and the need to exercise the demons it harbours in order to move forward to a place of new hope.’ Independent on Sunday‘The world is depicted in all its harshness and beauty in this evocative, lyrical debut novel of life in the cane fields of pre-independence Grenada…Ross conveys how the physical world is perceived by Pynter with raw intensity. The passage of time is wonderfully evoked…The emotional landscape is also brilliantly traversed.’ The Monday Book, Independent‘This is a compelling story of a misfit made good…Jacob Ross with his ear for island patois and poetic imagination, is a writer to watch.’ TLS‘Wonderful.’ Philip Hensher, Independent‘The world is depicted in all its harshness and beauty in this evocative, lyrical debut novel of life in the cane fields of pre-independence Grenada…Ross conveys how the physical world is perceived by Pynter with raw intensity.
