Beskrivning
Engineers shape the infrastructure, technologies, and systems that define modern life, yet the psychological dimensions of their work remain largely unexplored. Psychology of Engineers: A Practitioner’s Perspective on Cognition and Culture examines engineers not just as technical problem solvers but as cognitive, social, ethical, and organizational humans whose judgments influence safety, creativity, collaboration, and public trust. This book covers how engineers think, learn, make decisions under uncertainty, respond to risk, develop professional identities, and navigate complex socio-technical environments. The book is organized into three parts that move from definition to inner life to wider culture. Part I clarifies the terms "engineering" and "engineers" and outlines the book's aims. Part II examines the psychology of engineers in depth, covering mindset and cognitive style, motivation and professional identity, interpersonal behavior and communication, creativity and innovation, risk and ethical responsibility, and satisfaction and stress. Part III broadens the perspective to explore the psychological culture of engineering, including developmental pathways, educational socialization, teamwork and organizational life, public engagement, diversity and globalization, and the future of engineering in an era shaped by AI and automation. Throughout, the book emphasizes that engineering success depends on technical competence plus innate human skills such as judgment, communication, responsibility, resilience, and adaptability that readers can develop further through the Readers' Exercises and Projects included in every chapter. This book is for practicing engineers seeking deeper insight into their professional culture, engineering students preparing to enter the profession and educators looking for an understanding of how engineers think and develop. Its appeal will extend to managers, organizational psychologists and policy scholars interested in the human dimensions of engineering work.
