First, the contributors focus on just the seven states (plus the two partial swing states of Maine and Nebraska) now seen as being the key battlegrounds that define presidential elections, leaving out the states of New Hampshire, Ohio, and Minnesota which have become more reliably partisan. Second, the new edition employs a new co-editor who not only brings extensive scholarly experience but is also well networked with journalists and is attuned to their needs. David Schultz is Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Political Science, Environmental Studies, and Legal Studies ?at Hamline University. He is also a professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas and he holds an appointment at the Lithuanian Military Academy. A four-time Fulbright scholar who has taught extensively in Europe and Asia, and the winner of the Leslie A. Whittington national award for excellence in public affairs teaching, David ?is former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Public Affairs Education and the author of more than 45 books and 200+ articles on various aspects of American politics, election law, and the media and politics. ? His most recent books are Constitutional Precedent in US Supreme Court Reasoning (2022), Handbook of Election Law (2022), Presidential Swing States (2022), and Generational Politics in the United States (2024). Christopher A. Cooper is the Madison Distinguished Professor and Director of the Haire Institute for Public Policy at Western Carolina University. His research and teaching focus on U.S., state, southern and North Carolina politics, with particular emphasis on elections and electoral behavior in those contexts. Cooper is a frequent source for journalists seeking expertise on his areas of interest and has been quoted in CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and other outlets. His academic work features more than 50 articles in peer reviewedjournals.His most recent book is Anatomy of a Purple State: A North Carolina Politics Primer (UNC Press 2024).
