Beskrivning
(Post)Truth and Democracy: Rethinking Politics in Late Liberal Society challenges the alarmist narrative of a post-truth era, arguing that our current democratic crisis is a symptom of late liberal democracy confronting the unintended consequences of its own technological and cultural progress. This book cuts through the noise of digital anxiety to reveal how conflict, emotion, and disagreement are inherent to pluralistic societies rather than mere products of rapid digitalization or an algorithmically fuelled populism. By analyzing the shifting authority of experts and the discursive anarchy of social media, Arias-Maldonado explores why objective facts are frequently subordinated to affective loyalties and group identities. Through a critical reappraisal of thinkers like Hannah Arendt and George Orwell, the book argues that the separation of fact and opinion functions as a vital regulatory ideal rather than an accurate description of modern practice. This work offers a realistic, nuanced understanding of how public debate actually functions in an era defined by disenchantment and the radicalization of liberal autonomy, moving beyond simple nostalgia for a more rational past.Tailored for students and scholars in political science, philosophy, media studies, and sociology, this book provides a theoretically profound guide to navigating the complex intersections of truth and power in contemporary democratic life.

Mer information

Manuel Arias-Maldonado is Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Málaga, Spain. With an international academic background spanning Berkeley, NYU, and Munich, he is a remarkable voice in contemporary political theory. Building on a distinguished career in environmental political theory—including Real Green: Sustainability after the End of Nature (Routledge, 2016), the edited volume Rethinking the Environment for the Anthropocene (Routledge, 2019), and a number of Spanish titles—his recent research focuses on how liberal democracy can navigate the challenges of post-truth and populism while maintaining their foundational principles in the ambivalent context provided by late modernity.

Recensioner i media

“Emotional politics simplifies the deliberative process. We first identify whom we like and then adopt their point of view. Method—whether electoral programs or rational decision‑making mechanisms—becomes secondary. Through emotion, abstract slogans such as ‘Make America Great Again,’ ‘the caste and the people’, ‘economic patriotism’, or ‘we want our country back’ gain power. This is the new battlefield of Truth.”Juan Luis Manfredi, Professor of International Studies and European Center Researcher, University of Castilla–La Mancha (Spain)“Arias-Maldonado provides a crystal-clear account of why current use of the term ‘post-truth’ is inappropriate to describe something allegedly unique to our time. He rightly challenges the widespread current hypothesis of its uniqueness, and shows that the concept of ‘truth’ is always problematic and merits serious reflection. This is one of those books that cuts through loose discussion with analytical rigour, to everyone’s benefit.”Colin Crouch, Emeritus Professor, University of Warwick
