Beskrivning
A Political Economy of the Middle East, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive analysis of the political and economic forces shaping the Middle East, examining the relationships between economic development, state policies, and social actors across the region.Thoroughly revised and updated, this fifth edition introduces a new analytical framework and expanded coverage of key issues, including gender, climate change, and conflict. It examines the major economic and social transformations affecting the region, exploring demographic change, education, labour markets, urbanisation, water and agriculture, and international labour migration. Particular attention is given to the enduring effects of conflict and climate change on development, the challenges facing middle-income states, and the growing economic disparities between the wealthy Arab Gulf states and the region’s middle- and low-income countries. The book also explores the evolving role of civil society and social movements in the aftermath of the Arab uprisings, offering fresh perspectives on the region’s changing political and economic landscape. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Middle Eastern studies, political economy, development studies, international relations, and comparative politics, as well as policymakers and practitioners interested in the economic and social development of the Middle East.

“Following a long tradition of the region’s leading political economists, Diwan, Cammett and Heydemann have produced an essential and up-to-date analysis of the interplay of politics and economics in the Middle East. The book’s new edition critically deepens the political dimensions of its political economy analysis, making it an essential reference for students and researchers for years to come.“Steffen Hertog, Professor of Comparative Politics, London School of Economics."Cammett, Diwan and Heydemann’s new edition of A Political Economy of the Middle East is a tremendous contribution to the field. Not only has this series served as the foundational work on the political economy of the Middle East, but the authors in this new edition provide insightful updates and empirically informed discussions on events and developments in recent decades. They tackle important topics that involve the effects of conflict and defense, the rise of the Gulf, Climate change, development and human capital, regimes and economies, and regional and international influences as well. This book is a tour de force and should be required reading for every student studying the Middle East."Amaney A. Jamal, Pinceton, USA. "In the new multi-polar global political economy that is emerging no region will be more significant than the Middle East. This book provides the essential tools to understand the complex political economy of the region and also to appreciate its variation and cultural richness."James A. Robinson, University of Chicago and Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
