Platelets in Disease: Thrombotic Disorders and Disorders not Involving Hemorrhage or Thrombosis

Prof. Paolo Greseles, MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine at Perugia University (Italy) summa cum laude, where he also specialized in Internal Medicine, and received his PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Leuven (Belgium) in 1987 where he spent five years in the Centre directed by Marc Verstraete under the mentorship of Prof. Jos Vermylen. Paolo Gresele is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Perugia, Italy. His research interests are mainly focused on hemostatic and thrombotic disorders, with special attention on the role of platelets in hemorrhagic, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. He has been President of Italian Society on Hemostasis and Thrombosis, former chair of the Platelet Physiology Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) he is member of the panel of experts on ClinGen Hemostasis/Thrombosis Clinical Domain Working Group  and is the current Chair of the Specialized Working Group (SWG) on Thrombocytopenias and Platelet Function Disorders of the European Hematology Association (EHA-SWG). He is author of more than 390 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 74 - Google Scholar). He has been editor of several books on platelets including “Platelets in Thrombotic and Non-thrombotic Disorders: Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics”, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2002; “Platelets in Cardiovascular and Hematologic Disorders: a clinical handbook”, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2008; “Antiplatelet Agents”, Springer Verlag 2012.   “Platelets in thrombotic and non-thrombotic disorders 2nd Edition”, Springer Verlag, Cham, 2017.Dr. José A. López, MD attended medical school at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, after which he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hematology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biochemistry, working in the laboratory of the renowned biochemist, Earl W. Davie, PhD, who contributed enormously to our understanding of the biochemical reactions of blood coagulation and the structures of the enzymes and cofactors involved in this process.  Dr. López has held academic positions at the University of California, San Francisco and Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Disease, at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and, most recently, at the University of Washington, where he holds the title of Professor of Medicine (Hematology) and Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Mechanical Engineering. Dr. López is also Chief Scientific Officer of Bloodworks Northwest, a large regional blood center, and directs the Bloodworks Research Institute, where he also runs an active laboratory.Throughout his research career, Dr. López has investigated the interactions of blood cells with each other and with the vessel wall, focusing primarily on platelet adhesion in all its aspects, from basic to translational to clinical studies. In particular, he has studied the biology and clinical involvement of the receptor–ligand pair, the platelet glycoprotein Ib-IX-V complex and von Willebrand factor (VWF). Most recently, the work has focused on VWF self-association, a shear-dependent process that converts an already large protein in the blood to sometimes enormous fibers and strands with high prothrombotic potential. Of particular interest is how this process is regulated by the plasma lipoproteins HDL and LDL and the implications for cardiovascular diseases.  Dr. López’s work has been recognized by him having received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and many foundations, including serving as principal investigator on a Specialized Center of Research in Thrombosis grant and twice having been awarded the R35 Outstanding Investigator Award. He has served twice as a permanent member of NIH study (including as Chair), and has organized or helped to organize several international meetings on the topic of hemostasis, thrombosis and platelet biology, including serving as Chair of the Gordon Conference in 2006 on Hemostasis and Scientific Co-Chair in 2013 for the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology, the largest hematology meeting in the world. He has served as Associate Editor for the two most prominent journals dealing with hematology and vascular disease, Circulation and Blood.  He has also been involved in issues at the interface of science and society, such as establishing a program for the American Society of Hematology to increase diversity in the hematology workforce (for which he received the award Leadership in Promoting Diversity from the Society in 2018) and addressing bias in grant review as a member of the Council for the NIH Center for Scientific Review. He is currently serving as Co-Director of the Translational Research Training in Hematology Program, an international program to assist in fellow-to-faculty transition cosponsored by the European Hematology Association and the American Society of Hematology.Prof. Dominick J. Angiolillo MD, PhD graduated summa cum laude from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart Medical School in Rome, Italy, where he completed training in Medicine and Cardiology. He subsequently pursued training in Interventional Cardiology at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Ultimately, Dr. Angiolillo received his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Cardiology. After completing his training at the most prestigious academic centers in Europe, Dr. Angiolillo joined the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville in 2004. Currently, Dr. Angiolillo is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine with Tenure status, Chief of Cardiology and Medical Director of the University of Florida Health Cardiovascular Center. He is also the Medical Director of Cardiovascular Research, Program Director of the ACGME-accredited Interventional Cardiology Fellowship program, and Staff Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist at the University of Florida Health System. Much of Prof. Angiolillo’s professional career has been devoted to interventional cardiology and management of patients with acute coronary syndrome. His largest national and international recognition has been for his pivotal contributions in the field of thrombosis, being a key investigator in the clinical development of numerous novel antithrombotic agents for which he has received numerous national and international academic recognitions.Prof. Angiolillo has made major scientific contributions to many medical journals, as well as textbooks of cardiovascular medicine. He has authored over 780 peer-reviewed publications with over 65,000 citations, and an H-index of 119. For 7 consecutive years (since 2014), Prof. Angiolillo has been in the top 1 percent of most-cited researchers worldwide according to Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters’ list of The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds). Due to his major contributions to the field of antithrombotic therapy in patients with cardiovascular disease manifestations, Prof. Angiolillo has been invited to deliver numerous lectures across the globe. His leadership role as an academic clinician scientist has allowed to him to nurture and promote career growth and development of many young trainees pursuing both academic and clinical careers in the United States and abroad. Prof. Angiolillo is an active member of many cardiovascular societies in the Unites States and Europe. In addition, he is on the editorial board of numerous cardiovascular journals and a scientific reviewer for many major journals and extramural funding agencies.Professor Clive Page, OBE, BSc, PhD, FRSB, FBPhs (Hon), FFPM (Hon) is an Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology, King’s College London. Clive’s main research interests are in the pharmacology of inflammation and respiratory disease, and he has published over 300 scientific papers and book chapters.Clive was the co-founder and previous Chairman of the Board of Verona Pharma plc, a NASDAQ listed Company and was instrumental in the discovery and development of Ensifentrine for the treatment of COPD and other respiratory diseases which was recently approved by the FDA.He is a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute of Toxicology and Experimental Medicine in Hannover. Clive is also a Non Executive Director of Ananda Developments. Clive started his early career in the Pharmaceutical Industry at Sandoz Ltd, Basel, Switzerland and regularly consults to both Pharmaceutical and Biotech companies. Clive has previously held Non Executive Board positions at Cardiome in Canada, Stirling Products Ltd in Perth, Australia, Immune Regulation Ltd, EpiEndo, PreP Biopharma, Babraham Biotechnology Ltd and as a Trustee of the Babraham Institute, Cambridge. Clive Page is a former Chairman of the Animal Science Group of the Royal Society of Biology and has contributed widely to the public debate about the use of animals in Research. Clive is a recent past President of the British Pharmacological Society.Clive was awarded the Sandoz Prize from the British Pharmacological Society in 1988, The Tanabe Young Investigators Prize from the American College of Clinical Pharmacology in 1996 and the Royal Society of Biology President’s Medal in 2012 for “Outstanding Contributions to the Life Sciences”. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and an Honorary Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, Royal College of Physicians.
