Growing Pains is the second book in a series of memoirs about growing up in the city of Portsmouth after World War Two. We join George in 1954, when Roger Bannister breaks the four-minute mile barrier, meat comes off rationing, and the big musical hits of the year include I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus by the Beverley Sisters and Norman Wisdom's Don't Laugh at me 'cos I'm a Fool. Times are changing, but the country's leading naval port is still struggling to recover from the death and destruction brought about by wartime bombing.;The story of the pains and pleasures of coming of age in Portsmouth or any city as the Swinging Sixties loom and teenagers are invented makes for a sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious and always entertaining read.;A truly honest account of a young man's life, his struggles with adolescence and keeping up the appearance of being tough.

Before becoming a fully fledged author, George East sampled a host of career opportunities including DJ, pub landlord and the world's only professional bed tester. In the process, he failed miserably in his ambitions to find fame and fortune as a rock god and superstar actor. In later years he became an accidental best-selling author with his books about moving to France and living in a near-derelict water mill. Older if not wiser, George now lives with his wife Donella in the wild west of the Isle of Wight.

This book gives a really clear and colourful description of what it was like being a pre-teenage lad in and around the city of Portsmouth following the second world war, which had destroyed large areas of the buildings and streets.; I lived through the same period and shared the same memories of life, school and 'entertainment' at home and in the streets of Pompey. DE. Porter, genuine customer review.; Brilliant - What a great story. I could relate to everything that I read. George has captured a real essence of life in those days. Dajus, customer review
