What does Pan-Africanism mean today? This book offers a fundamental reappraisal of Pan-Africanism as a tradition of political thought and a framework for understanding contemporary global politics. Moving beyond accounts that treat it as a historical movement, diplomatic project, or symbolic ideal, it shows how Pan-Africanism has functioned as a mode of political reasoning through which Africans and people of African descent have interpreted, challenged, and sought to transform the structures of global power.Drawing on expert surveys, ethnographic fieldwork, diplomatic archives, and biographical reconstruction, the volume's twenty chapters examine Pan-Africanism across diplomacy, security, borderlands, social movements, diaspora politics, feminist thought, and cultural restitution. They show how Pan-Africanism evolved from anti-colonial struggle into a living tradition of political thought that continues to illuminate the enduring challenges of sovereignty, inequality, and collective freedom.Pan-Africanism Today shows why Pan-Africanism remains indispensable for understanding global politics and the structures of power that shape it.This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. Oxford Studies in African Politics and International Relations is a series for scholars and students working on African politics and International Relations and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on contemporary developments in African political science, political economy, and International Relations, such as electoral politics, democratization, decentralization, gender and political representation, the political impact of natural resources, the dynamics and consequences of conflict, comparative political thought, and the nature of the continent's engagement with the East and West. Comparative and mixed methods work is particularly encouraged. Case studies are welcomed but should demonstrate the broader theoretical and empirical implications of the study and its wider relevance to contemporary debates. The focus of the series is on sub-Saharan Africa, although proposals that explain how the region engages with North Africa and other parts of the world are of interest.Series Editors: Nic Cheeseman (University of Birmingham), Peace Medie (University of Bristol), and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira (Sciences Po, Paris).
