The Oxford History of Modern German Theology comprises twenty-eight chapters from a wide range of academics and presents a comprehensive history of German academic theology from 1848 to 1918. The focus of this volume is organized around key theological movements and debates in both Protestantism and Catholicism in the context of wider social and political developments in a rapidly changing environment. The history of German academic theology exerted an enormous influence on the later development of theology across the world, especially in North America, in relation to the wider development of religion. This volume includes extensive introductory histories, explaining the wider social, political, university, and ecclesiastical contexts for each of the three historical subdivisions into which the contributions are organized. These periods are from the short-lived German Revolution of 1848 to the formation of the German Empire in 1871; from 1871 to the so-called year of the three Emperors in 1888; and from 1888 to the end of the First World War in 1918 when the Empire collapsed. With perspectives from both leading and emerging experts and academics across Europe, North America, and beyond, this volume forms a unique exploration of one of the most formative periods in the development of Christian theology in a time of enormous change.
