Palaeontologist Richard Owen (1804–92) was superintendent of natural history in the British Museum and founder of the Natural History Museum. This 1866 work gives a thorough overview of vertebrate anatomy. Volume 2 deals chiefly with birds, and begins the discussion of the characteristics of mammals.
