Since Dave Hewitt’s first road trip to the United States in 2006 he has always tried to return to North America at least once a year to photograph trains. Not just trains, though, but trains embedded in the landscape. The North American continent is so vast and the scenery so varied that endless opportunities arise for a man in a car with a map and a camera. Here, he presents his impressions of American and Canadian railroads, from British Columbia to California, from Ontario to Oregon, all showcasing wonderful panoramas and spectacular vistas. A wealth of stunning images is coupled with amusing anecdotes and intriguing insights, summing up the adventures to be had as an English railfan in North America.
Dave Hewitt was born in Tamworth, Staffordshire and quickly became a rail enthusiast. He became interested in railway photography after taking early retirement from a teaching career, beginning with his local heritage railway, Tanfield. He has visited many lines in England and Wales and over the last twenty years has made at least one trip a year to North America to photograph trains in the US and Canada. He is a volunteer at the Tanfield Railway.
'The pictures, totalling more than 100, have been assembled from collections built up during multiple visits to North America and it is clear that, in addition to technical photographic skill, the author has worked diligently and patiently to find locations that make great images rather than simply record shots.'
