No Immediate Remedy is a collection of poems written during the first two years of the Covid pandemic, in that disconcerting and eerie inward space created by lockdowns and social distancing. The sense of loss and isolation imposed by the pandemic, and the grieving, is represented in the opening section. This is followed by a commentary on the early months of the invasion of Ukraine viewed through the lens provided by images and snippets on Twitter. The closing section provides responses to a series of events that took place in the United States over the course of that same Spring and Summer, some of these also devastating.

Jean Andrews was born in the West of Ireland and has spent her adult life in the UK as a lecturer in Hispanic Studies, currently at the University of Nottingham. She has published five collections of poetry and two books of translated poetry by Hispanic authors. Her work is inflected both by her Irish upbringing and her reading and teaching of poetry in the Romance languages. It is lyrical and rooted in the everyday but also open to engagement with the larger more abstract questions, such as history and identity, that impact on all our lives.
