In this book, originally published in 1973, the author, well-known for his studies in Nietzsche, has written a lucid and challenging introduction to Nietzsche’s philosophy and to other aspects of his authorship. Nietzsche’s background and the evolution of his thought are discussed, and a detailed exposition of his mature ideas is given, drawing on his own words wherever possible. Demonstrating the nature and extent of Nietzsche’s posthumous influence, the author assesses his relationship with those modern movements in philosophy and politics which have claimed him as a progenitor. He also looks at Nietzsche the poet, philologist, amateur composer and letter writer.
