'A New History of Southeast Asia will perform a service for Southeast Asian studies no less seminal than that rendered by D.G.E. Hall's pioneering volume some 55 years ago. It will provide Southeast Asian Studies with a new intellectual agenda, a new set of research questions, and a new instrument with which to instruct and stimulate the next generation. Without doubt, the appearance of this history text is itself an historic achievement.' - Victor Lieberman, Professor of History, University of Michigan, USA '[T]he authors of A New History of Southeast Asia are to be congratulated for having produced a book that will serve as a solid, up-to-date introduction to the general field of Southeast Asian history. It is one that I could certainly recommend to undergraduate students.' Patrick Jory, University of Queensland, The Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society
