There is a continuous exchange of ideas taking place at the border of the biological and physical sciences in many areas of nanoscience. Nanotechnology uses biomimetic or bio-inspired processes to produce nanosized materials for applications in biology and other fields. In return, the fruits of nanotechnology are applied to expanding areas of biomedical and therapeutic processes, such as new nanostructures and scaffolds for tissue engineering or targeted drug delivery. In this way, nanobiotechnology serves as a bridge between nano and bio, with nanoscale materials providing the building blocks for the construction of the "bridge." Nanobiomaterials: Development and Applications gives you a broad, interdisciplinary view of current developments as well as new findings and applications in bionanomaterials. The book brings together the work of international contributors who are actively engaged at the forefront of research in their respective disciplines.Organized into four parts, this book explores the preparation and characterization of nanomaterials, new preparation routes of soft nanomaterials using biomolecules, nano- and microscale hybridization of materials, and nanotoxicity. The contributors cover a diverse set of topics, including:Biomimetic synthesisBioimaging and cancer diagnosisPhotodynamic therapyBioconjugated carbon nanotube DNA transfection and tumor targetingMagnetically induced hyperthermiaCytotoxity mechanisms and their potential use in therapyVirus-enabled manufacturing of functional nanomaterialsBiocatalitic nanosystems and enzyme immobilizationTissue engineeringThe fabrication of hybrid microswimmersBionanomaterial applications in environmental remediationEach chapter is richly illustrated and includes an extensive list of references to guide you toward further research. Combining bionanomaterial development and applications, the book clearly demonstrates the importance of these materials to biotechnology, biomedicine, and environmental remediation. It offers an accessible overview for students, industrial researchers, pharmaceutical innovators, medical and public health personnel, environmental scientists and engineers, and anyone interested in this interdisciplinary field.

"The topics are very focused yet thorough. The theme of the book is simple and clear, which is the use of nanomaterials for various bio-applications, yet it is thorough in providing detailed discussion from the design and development stage of those nanomaterials to application. Important issues such as the toxicity of these materials are also presented. ... The book maintains a singular focus throughout, a highly advantageous facet not typically seen in other books. The varied topics tie nanomaterials development closely with bioapplication in specific fields, including bioimaging, cancer therapy, and biosensing. Overall, this book was structured in a manner that it could be easily read by anyone interested in the subject, with specific references selected to provide further, more detailed insight into specific topics."––Timothy Tan, Associate Professor, School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore "The main strength of this book is the consideration of various interdisciplinary aspects of nanobiotechnology such as engineering and surface chemistry aspects involving different nanomaterials. ... This book would be a good reference for graduate students and researchers who are studying or working in the area of nanobiotechnology."—Nikhil R. Jana, Centre for Advanced Materials, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, India"This book, focused principally on development and application of nanomaterials in the biomedical field, gives an overview on the characterization and preparation of nanoparticles and polymeric matrices assembled and bio-inspired to nature. Written by an international team of experts in biology and chemistry, it emphasizes the need for a more stringent approach to better integrate chemistry, physics and biology for solving the many aspects of the tissue and organs engineering open until today. Offering a good overview on nano-biomaterials as medical devices, drug delivery and tissue engineering systems, the book may be of help not only to specialists on polymer materials, dermatologists, plastic surgeons and clinicians, but also to students in chemistry and medicine and marketing specialists who should like to know more in deep and different interdisciplinary aspects of Nanobiotechnology."—Journal of Applied Cosmetology, July/December 2017
